National Marine Aquaculture Initiative
An agency under the U.S. Department of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched the National Marine Aquaculture Initiative (NMAI) in 1998, to help resolve the issues standing in the way of a more robust domestic marine aquaculture industry. Since its launch, the NMAI has provided funding to address a broad range of topics, including aquaculture policy and regulation, offshore aquaculture, marine recirculating systems, shellfish farming, and new species research. 2008-2009 National Marine Aquaculture Initiative
Coordinated by the NOAA Aquaculture Program and NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, the NOAA 2008-2009 National Marine Aquaculture Initiative grants competition is now closed. The agency received over 240 proposals seeking $85 million in research funding. The 2008-09 grant recipients will be announced in 2008.

2006-2007 National Marine Aquaculture Initiative Grant Awards
In September 2006, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded $3.6 million in competitive grants to 11 sustainable marine aquaculture demonstration and research projects under the 2006-2007 National Marine Aquaculture Initiative. In September 2007, NOAA awarded another $3.6 million in competitive grants to 14 projects as part of the same initiative. The 2006 and 2007 funding was directed at projects assessing the commercial potential of marine aquaculture, the feasibility of stock enhancement, the environmental impacts of aquaculture in various environments, as well as research on key aquatic animal health and nutrition issues.
