NOAA-USDA Kick Off Aquaculture Feeds Initiative
On November 15, 2007, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) kicked off a new initiative to accelerate the development of alternative feeds for aquaculture. This announcement highlights the initiative and includes information on submitting a public comment.

NOAA Releases 10-Year Plan for Aquaculture
On October 30, 2007, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) finalized and adopted the 10-Year Plan for Marine Aquaculture as an agency-wide policy document. The plan is intended to guide the agency as it works toward establishing marine aquaculture as an integral part of the U.S. seafood industry and as a viable technology for replenishing important commercial and recreational fisheries. The plan provides specific goals for the NOAA Aquaculture Program and an assessment of the challenges the agency will face in its effort to reach its goals.

American Fisheries Society Symposium Focuses on Aquaculture
A special symposium, titled the Environmental Impacts of Coastal Ocean Aquaculture, was held on September 4, 2007, at 137th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society meeting in San Francisco, California. Organized by James A. Morris, Jr., and Dr. John J. Govoni of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, the symposium provided a comprehensive assessment and analysis of environmental impacts of coastal ocean aquaculture. This symposium included invited and contributed papers encompassing environmental impacts of both shellfish and finfish culture and forecasts of future aquaculture activities affecting global coastal ocean ecosystems. Dr. Michael Rubino, manager of the NOAA Aquaculture program, delivered the keynote presentation for the session.
